Joint PRESENTATION TOPIC

Lead Time Prediction: Data Science Applications in the Steel Manufacturing Industry

Building and maintaining customer partnerships is crucial for any business to be successful and grow. There are many ways companies can do this including having great quality products or very responsive customer service. Companies are now taking this a step further by better informing their customers when their products are going to be shipped. This is especially important for manufacturing companies whose made-to-order products are used as raw materials by their customers; as those customers rely on timely shipments to better plan production on their side. Estimating when a product will be ready to ship can be quite the cumbersome task, as there are many factors that play into when a product will be manufactured. When done correctly the customer is happy and this helps maintain a good relationship with the manufacturing company. With the necessary data and applying Machine Learning, this task becomes easier. During this talk we will discuss the Machine Learning solution that was put in place to help Nucor, the largest steel producer in the United States, better estimate the lead time of a product and when it will be ready to ship.
